Chapter 2

Where does data come from?

chapter 1.jpeg

Data is like the footprints you leave behind every day at school! Each morning when you swipe your student card at the school gate, that's a piece of data telling teachers you've arrived. When you take a test on a tablet, every answer you choose creates data. When you borrow books from the library and the librarian scans the barcode, that's also data being recorded!

Data comes from everywhere around you. When you photograph your lunch at the cafeteria with your phone, you're creating image data. When you text friends in the class group chat to ask about homework, you're creating text data. When you watch English lesson videos on YouTube, you're creating data about viewing time and what you like. Even when you play games during recess, the scores and levels you achieve are all data!

But AI has changed how data is created and used tremendously! In the past, when you wrote an essay, teachers had to read every word to grade it. Now, AI can help teachers detect spelling errors instantly, like having a smart assistant always ready. AI learns from millions of other essays to know what makes good writing and common mistakes.

In art class, when you draw on a tablet, AI can suggest suitable colors or tips for better shading. It learns from millions of paintings worldwide to understand what art is. The data you create while drawing helps AI become smarter, and AI helps you create better. Isn't that amazing?

In PE class, if you wear a smart bracelet, it records your steps and heart rate. That's all health data! AI analyzes this data to tell you if you're exercising enough, like a PE teacher tracking your progress. AI can compare your data with millions of other students and give personalized advice.

When you ask a voice assistant "What's the weather today?" to know if you should bring a jacket to school, you're creating voice data. AI converts your speech to text, understands the question, and finds the answer. It learns from millions of different voices - northern accent, southern accent, children's voices, adult voices - to understand exactly what you're saying.

In the classroom, smart boards record every note teachers write. AI can convert handwriting to typed text, translate to other languages, or create exercises from lesson content. Data from today's lesson can help AI generate review questions for you on the weekend.

Even at the school cafeteria, when you buy bread with your card, transaction data is created. AI analyzes which foods are most popular so the cafeteria manager knows what to cook more of. It also reminds you if you're buying too many sweets and suggests eating more fruit!

All this data travels through the school wifi, through the internet, to faraway data centers. There, AI works tirelessly to organize, analyze, and learn from the massive mountain of data. Every day, you and millions of other students create billions of pieces of data. AI transforms this huge pile of data into something useful - helping teachers teach better, helping you learn more effectively, and making school life more enjoyable!
